95 RP. "Lastly, the 2013 El Coco Proprietary Blend Composition is an 800-case cuvée of 47% old vine Zinfandel, 42% Petite Sirah, 9% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon. Like the others, it has a black/purple color, a magnificent fragrance of dark berry fruits such as blueberry, blackberry and cassis along with some flowers, incense and charcoal. Full-bodied and crafted for its sumptuous, voluptuous mouthfeel, the finish is broad, savory and lasts almost 40+ seconds . . . . The winemaker behind these magnificent wines is Dave Phinney, working from the Dr. George Beldon Crane Vineyard, which was first planted as a site in 1885. At that time it was largely a blend of grapes often referred to as “mixed blacks.” There are now eight acres in production, four containing the original plantings and the rest planted from 1930 onward. Phinney and a group of his friends purchased the vineyard in 2012. These notes reflect what they’re doing to date and serious consumers should be thrilled." Wine Advocate #227, Oct 2016 |
