92 JG. "Roumier’s 1989 Charmes-Chambertin is another stellar success in what is seemingly turning out to be a great vintage for the domaine. It is interesting to note that 1989 has always been considered mildly disappointing for the Roumiers, in the context of their very high standards and the potential of the vintage. However, the Roumier ‘89s we tasted seem to argue that early pessimism has been nothing more than excessive worrying, and that the wines have turned out superb chez Roumier. The nose on the Charmes is deep, complex and classically sauvage, with scents of plums, grilled venison, herb tones, coffee, minerals and a deft touch of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and serious, with a great core of fruit, fine soil inflection, great grip, and a very long, complex and moderately tannic finish. This wine is just about ready for primetime, but should easily last . . ." John Gilman, View From the Cellar, Bonus Articles, Domaine Georges Roumier |
