92+ JG. "The 2006 les Varennes du Grand Clos is another fantastic example of the vintage, as it jumps from the glass in a vibrant mélange of red and black cherries, tobacco smoke, a great base of complex soil tones, bitter chocolate, tree bark, violets and a bit of vanillin oak. I would guess that the touch of wood here comes from some one, two or three year-old barrels that may have replaced some older wood, as it is a very discreet touch of oak. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and beautifully balanced, with a sappy core of black cherry fruit, fine soil inflection, ripe tannins, sound acids, and excellent focus and grip on the chewy, poised and palate-staining finish. A truly superb bottle of young, suave Chinon." John Gilman, View From the Cellar #17, Oct 2008 |
