94 JG. "Given how brilliantly the ’79 DRC Richebourg showed several months later, I have to wonder if the Romanée-Conti would have even been more impressive if it had not been poured at a very big tasting where the bottle was not decanted. My gut instinct is that this wine probably deserves a couple more points if treated gently. The ’79 Romanée-Conti is absolutely stunning . . . as the wine is in full bloom and as expressive as one could ever ask it to be. The refined and perfumed nose offers up notes of raspberry, strawberry, woodsmoke, heather, ginger, tea leaves, orange peel, sous bois and a cedar. On the palate the wine is medium-full, complex and intensely flavored, with excellent focus and depth, sound acids, and a long, pretty, complex and tangy finish. Outstanding middleweight."
