Dominio de Anza/Diego Magaña Bierzo Tinto Selección de Parcelas 2020, 0.75L
Mencía / Bastardo / Garnacha Tintorera from Bierzo, Castilla Y Leon

I found earthier notes and a darker aromas in the 2020 Dominio de Anza Selección de Parcelas, a common thing in the 2020s, perhaps a little reductive. In 2020, part of the wine comes from a new plot on slate soils in the village of San Lorenzo, and perhaps it has some notes reminiscent of a Barolo. The profile of the wine has changed: it's not as aromatic as the 2019, and it has a different texture with more noticeable tannins. This 15% of the wine from a different zone and soil has changed it. It might require more time. 8,900 bottles produced. 94 Luis Gutierrez, Wine Advocate, Jan 2022

Dominio de Pingus Flor de Pingus 2020, 0.75L
Tempranillo from Ribera del Duero, Castilla y León

"Flor is what Peter Sisseck calls "my village wine", sourced from La Horra with a smidgeon from Olmedillo. Featuring 3% Grenache for the first time, as well as 0.5% of white grapes, it's a gentle, precise, beautifully balanced red, with granular tannins, plum, liquorice and wild strawberry flavours and a subtle, palate-caressing finish." 95, Tim Atkin, TimAtkin.com

"There is around 20% new oak in the 2020 Flor de Pingus, and because it has a little younger vines (there was a land-consolidation project in La Horra in 2006!), there'll be some Garnacha starting in 2021 and maybe some oak vats for aging too. All this shows the direction, where he found structure and volume in the palate, with textured tannins. It's harmonious and elegant, aromatic and floral, perfumed and showy, with contained ripeness and around 14% alcohol. The palate is quite powerful, with abundant but fine tannins." 94+, Luis Guiterrez, Wine Advocate

Dominio de Pingus Ribera del Duero PSI 2021, 0.75L
Tempranillo from Ribera del Duero, Castilla y León

""The 2021 PSI is 90% Tempranillo and 10% Garnacha sourced from old vines planted in calcareous soils and was aged for up to 16 months in mostly sizeable French oak barrels. In the glass, it's garnet-red with a light purple sheen. The nose offers blood notes along with sour cherry and blackberry, intertwined with violets and dried flowers, resulting in a layered, complex profile. On the palate, it's dry and velvety. Chalky tannins define a compact mouthfeel and long-lasting fruit and floral flavors. The 2021 is a distinctive Ribera del Duero with excellent nuance and agility". 96, Joaquin Hidalgo, Vinous, Sep 2023

La Vizcaina (Raúl Pérez) Bierzo El Rapolao 2019, 0.75L
Mencía from Bierzo, Castilla y León

"Deep garnet. Deep-pitched cherry and cassis aromas are complemented by suggestions of smoky minerals, baking spices and lavender, along with a licorice note that builds with air. Youthfully chewy and alluringly sweet, offering concentrated, spice-laced black raspberry, bitter cherry, boysenberry and succulent herb flavors sharpened by a jolt of juicy acidity. Finishes sweet, smoky and extremely long, showing solid grip and mounting tannins that add framework to the intense dark fruit.94 Points Josh Raynolds, Vinous

La Vizcaina (Raúl Pérez) Bierzo La Vitoriana 2019, 0.75L
Mencía from Bierzo, Castilla y León

"Full ruby. Spice- and smoke-accented cherry and dark berry scents show very good energy and focus. Blackberry, bitter cherry and candied licorice on the palate, along with suggestions of dark chocolate and succulent herbs. Opens up slowly with air and finishes very long and spicy, with smooth, even tannins and lingering florality.94 Points Josh Raynolds, Vinous

La Vizcaina (Raúl Pérez) Bierzo Las Gundiñas 2019, 0.75L
Mencía from Bierzo, Castilla y León

"Dark violet. A highly perfumed bouquet evokes ripe red and blue fruits, candied flowers, licorice and baking spices. Gently sweet and chewy on the palate, offering intense black currant, cherry and spicecake flavors braced by an undercurrent of juicy acidity. Shows firming grip and smoky mineral lift on a persistent finish that features building tannins and a touch of gaminess." 92 Points Josh Raynolds, Vinous

Raúl Pérez 'Ultreia La Claudina' Godello Bierzo 2020, 0.75L
Godello from Bierzo, Castilla y León

"They have lowered the alcohol and ripeness in most of the whites, but some vineyards are more difficult than others... The 2020 Ultreia La Claudina comes from a plot on sandy soils that needs higher ripeness to avoid excess bitterness. In 2020 it matured in 50% new barrels as they wanted to see how the wine behaved. It has power and consistence, but the style is a little different from what the wine was before, a little creamier and marked by the élevage. It's more exuberant and quite the opposite from the rectitude of La del Vivo. There are some 2,200 bottles from 1,700 liters of wine." 94 Points, Luis Guiterrez, Wine Advocate

Vinas Serranas El Canchorral 2019, 0.75L
Rufete from Castilla y León, Castilla y León

"The 2019 El Canchorral is a blend of Calabrés (Garnacha), Aragonés (Tempranillo), Verdejo Negro, Rufete Blanco, Palomino, Moscatel and other grapes planted 85 years ago on degraded pink granite soils. This is the only wine that ferments with 100% full clusters. It has a lot of white grapes and is more floral, with less alcohol (it's 13.5% even in this riper year), more acidity and a lower pH. It is more floral à la Fleury and very expressive, as they can use very low doses of sulfur in this wine given its higher natural acidity (possibly because of the white grapes). This comes from a very old vineyard, and the varieties feel very integrated and complement each other. It comes through as complex and nuanced, a little riper and showier than the 2018. The palate reflects the effect of the stems in the vinification a little. All of these single-vineyard wines matured in used oak barrels for some 15 months in 2019. Around 1,500 bottles were filled in May 2021." 94 Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate

Vinedos del Jorco Las Enebradas Navalgordo 2017, 0.75L
Grenache from Paraje del Jorco, Castilla y León

"I was really looking forward to the 2017 Las Enebradas, because the first vintage, 2016, was the revelation of my last review of the zone of Gredos. I was quite surprised because the profile is very different: the wine has a lot more color and up to 2% more alcohol. Nacho Jiménez, one of the partners, explained that the profile of the 2016 vintage was exceptional and hard to replicate, as yields were higher and it rained just before they picked the grapes, so the wine is a lot lighter. 2017 was very different, a lot warmer and with lower yields, and the grapes delivered a concentrated juice with a lot more color, tannin and alcohol. It has a more Mediterranean profile, more in line with the rest of the wines. This fermented with 50% full clusters and temperature control and matured in one 500-liter oak barrel. Despite the higher ripeness and the headier character, the wines from Navatalgordo have a different texture and fine thread, the finesse of a cooler place and sandy soils at higher altitude (even if the vines are south-facing here), and you see it when tasting this next to the wines from Cebreros. It's more elegant and fresher. 570 bottles were filled in August 2019." 93 Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate

Alvaro Palacios Finca Dofi Gratallops 2021, 0.75L
Grenache / Cariñena from Priorat, Catalunya

"The more backward of the 2021s was the 2021 Finca Dofí, which was very primary and smelled almost like the fermentation vessels, and it took time in the glass to open up. The blend is higher in Garnacha and they couldn't use the Picapoll, as it didn't work well that cool year, so it's 90% Garnacha, 9% Cariñena and 1% white grapes. It achieved 14.5% alcohol but kept better freshness than in 2020, a constant in the 2021 wines. Very promising..." 96-98 Luis Guiterrez, Wine Advocate

Clos Mogador 2020, 0.75L
Grenache / Carignan / Syrah / Cabernet Sauvignon from Priorat, Catalunya

"The wine is more tannic and ... it matured exclusively in 2,000-liter oak foudre, and the impact of the wood is milder. A very good result, it's powerful but has good balance. The vintage is more tannic ..." 97 Luis Guiterrez, Wine Advocate

"Founded in 1979, the 20ha Clos Mogador lies at 350m altitude , surrounded by mountains up to 1,200m. The vines here grow on slate soils and the 2020 wine is a blend of 45% Garnacha, 29% Cariñena, 16% Syrah and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, fermented using 30% whole bunches and indigenous yeasts. The wine was aged entirely in 2,000L French oak foudres for 18 months before bottling. Beth Willard: A really dark and intense wine that speaks of the region. High-toned, perfumed notes and raspberry on the nose. Oak is well integrated. Big and rich, but with underlying elegance. Polished and serious. Diana Rollan: Dense and powerful nose with dark fruit, and notes of plum, black cherry, blueberries, sandalwood and dried herbs. Big and bold with pronounced tannins, but round and textured. David Williams: Complex nose with notes of blood orange, black cherry and Mediterranean herbs. Intensity but also drive on the palate; great mineral acidity, freshness." 95 Decanter Magazine

Bodegas y Viñedos Artadi Quintanilla 2019, 0.75L
Tempranillo from Álava, Euskadi

"Fresh yet deep nose, exuding aromas of dark blackberries, blueberries and a hint of iodine, violet, cream and mineral. Pretty elegant on the palate with a medium to full body, unleashing plenty of chalky tannins that give a solid bite to the finish. Dense yet still fluid, with a lengthy finish. Beautiful balance. Tempranillo. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold." 96 James Suckling, Jamessuckling.com, Sept 2022

"The bottled 2019 Quintanilla combines the power of the year and the place with 14.68% alcohol and soft acidity. There are more tannins, and it has the chalky sensation of the limestone. It also has notions of ripe berries and the character of this year's wines, keeping the freshness. This is austere and mineral within the ripeness. It comes from a 1.13-hectare plot on limestone and sandstone soils planted in 1951 in the village of Elvillar, a walled, old-vine plot located in what was the 15th-century village of San Lorenzo de Quintanilla. The vineyard tends to produce powerful wines, and its grapes were always used to make the Pagos Viejos. This has some rugged tannins that give it a little rusticity, a character of the plot that tends to get stressed in warmer years. 2,800 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2021." 93+ Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate, July 2022

Bodegas Albamar Pepe Luis Albarino 2021, 0.75L
Albariño from Rías Baixas, Galicia

“There were more iodine and low-tide notes in the nose of the 2021 Pepe Luis, with herbal and moss aromas, while the smoky notes were more in the background. The vintage is more marked in this wine; this is sharper and more austere than the rounder 2020 that I tasted next to it, despite both being balanced, fresh and harmonious. 6,100 bottles were produced. Dominio do Bibei 'Lalama' Ribeira Sacra 2020, 0.75L
Mencia from Ribeira Sacra, Galicia

“As I have mentioned in the past, Dominio Do Bibei is located in the most isolated and rustically beautiful corner of Ribeira Sacra, Quiroga-Bibei, where the terraced mountain vineyards are planted on granite to the customary regional blends dominant in Mencía, co-planted with smaller percentages of Brancellao, Garnacha Tintorera, Bastardo and Caiño. The Lalama bottling is made from de-stemmed grapes, fermented with indigenous yeasts and raised in older Burgundy casks prior to bottling. The 2020 Lalama comes in at fourteen percent octane and delivers a pure and very refined bouquet of pomegranate, cassis, cigar wrapper, graphite, granitic soil tones, a touch of fresh herb tones, cigar smoke and just a touch of cedary oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and beautifully balanced, with superb depth at the core, excellent transparency and grip, fine-grained tannins and a very long, focused and complex finish. This is a great bottle in the making, but give it some hibernation time in the cellar to let those suave tannins start to fall away and the wine to drink with generosity.”

Guimaro Finca Meixeman Ribeira Sacra 2019, 0.75L
Mencia / Brancellao / Merenzao / Garnacha / Mouratón / Negreda / Sousón from Ribeira Sacra, Galicia

"The single-vineyard 2019 Finca Meixeman comes from one of their oldest vineyards, planted with a field blend of 80% Mencía and 20% Brancellao, Merenzao, Garnacha, Mouratón, Negreda and Sousón. It has an austere nose that benefitted from being in the glass for over one hour, so decanting in advance might be a good idea if you are going to pull the cork any time soon. It has subtle notes of violets and wild berries and herbs. It has 13% alcohol but, despite that, feels a little riper than the other 2019s, perhaps more approachable and gourmand. There are some 8,000 bottles. It was bottled in February 2021." 96 Points, Luis Guiterrez, Wine Advocate

Guimaro Ribeira Sacra A Ponte 2019, 0.75L
Mencia from Ribeira Sacra, Galicia

"The single-vineyard 2019 A Ponte was produced with grapes from vines planted in 2010, a vineyard that used to belong to the Guímaro family a long time ago that they had to buy again and replant. It's a blend of 30% Mencía and similar parts of Caíño, Merenzao, Brancellao and Sousón. All the grapes fermented together with 100% full clusters in closed troncoconic vats with a 50-day total maceration time and always matured in 500-liter barrels. It has less color and is rather light and ethereal compared to its siblings. All the 2019s are more closed than the 2020s, and the wines are more austere and, in general, have more depth and balance, with lower alcohol. This has 13% and a subtle nose of wild flowers and herbs, nuanced and complex. This is superb for such young vines. 4,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2020." 95+ Points, Luis Guiterrez, Wine Advocate

Luis A. Rodriguez Vazquez Vina de Martin Escolma Blanco 2015, 0.75L
Treixadura / Albariño / Lado / Torrontés from Ribeiro, Galicia

"The current vintage of the top of the range in white is the 2015 Viña de Martín Escolma Blanco. Luis Anxo talks about a very good vintage, and he's always quite prudent and humble, which means the vintage was no less than excellent, with perfect weather that allowed picking each plot of white at the right time and the red ripened properly. Here, he wants to express "our way of understanding wine: ancestral varieties and lands, manual and respectful viticulture, forcing low yields, minimal intervention and a relatively long time in the cellar. We want a complex wine, but direct and intimate." This is a blend of Treixadura Albariño, Lado and Torrontés from his oldest vineyards on poor soils that deliver one kilo per plant. Each plot ferments separately with indigenous yeasts in new or semi-new 300-, 500- or 600-liter oak barrels, where the wine is kept with lees for one year, then blended and bottled. It's kept three years in bottle and sold the November four years after the harvest. This is a quiet and serious wine, like its creator, subtle, elegant and nuanced. It has notes of herbs and spices, pollen and beeswax. This is a super balanced vintage, with ripeness, concentration, freshness and elegance in a rare combination. This feels very young and seems to be evolving at a very slow pace and should make old bones. I've had wines from Luis Anxo close to 30 years old, and they are still going strong, so my drinking window is very conservative. 4,800 bottles and 200 magnums were filled in December 2016." 95 Points, Luis Guiterrez, Wine Advocate

Bodegas Hermanos Pecina Rioja Senorio de Pecina Reserva 2014, 0.75L
Tempranillo from Rioja Alta, La Rioja

"The 2014 Rioja “Reserva” from Señorío de P. Peciña is another beautiful current release from this great bodegas. The wine is showing far more secondary complexity on the nose than the lovely 2015 Crianza bottling, wafting from the glass in an utterly refined blend of cherries, raspberries, cigar smoke, salty soil tones, cloves, allspice, incipient nutskin and a lovely foundation of coconutty American oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and already nicely velvety, with a sappy core of fruit, lovely mineral undertow, suave, mellowing tannins and a long, complex and seamlessly balanced finish. Great juice. (Drink between 2022-2065)" 93+, John Gilman, View from the Cellar

Diego Magana Anza Rioja 2021, 0.75L
Tempranillo / Grenache / Carignan / Graciano / Macabeo from Rioja, La Rioja

"He makes his regular bottling of Rioja from vines that range from 30 to 50-something years of age, with the field blend primarily planted to Tempranillo, but also including small percentages of Grenache, Graciano, Mazuelo [aka Carignan], and Viura [aka Macabeo], among others. His 2021 Rioja is a lovely young wine, coming in at 13.5% octane and offering up scents of raspberries, a touch of fruitcake, garrigue spice tones, stony soil, cedar and cigar smoke. On the palate the wine is deep, focused and full, with fine depth at the core, chewy tannins, fine balance and a long, vibrant and nascently complex finish. Once this has had its period of hibernation, it will be excellent." 92 John Gilman, View From The Cellar

La Rioja Alta Rioja Gran Reserva 904 Selección Especial 2015, 0.75L
Tempranillo / Graciano from Rioja Alta, La Rioja

"A perfumed nose of plums, mulberries, mushrooms, caramel, sweet tobacco and sweet spices. Full-bodied with velvety, fine tannins and lively acidity. Balanced and supple with a creamy texture. Delicate and precise with a long, polished finish. 90% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano. Drink or hold." 97 James Suckling

"Color: dark cherry, garnet edge; Aroma: ripe fruit, candied fruit, wood, tobacco, sweet spices, wild herbs, and a lactic note; Palate: spicy, ripe tannins, long, elegant." 97 Guía Peñín

"The 2015 Rioja “Selección Especial 904” Gran Reserva from La Rioja Alta is crafted from a blend of eighty-nine percent tempranillo and eleven percent graciano in this vintage, with all of these vines at least sixty years of age. The wine was raised in four and a half year-old American oak barrels for thirty-three months prior to assemblage and bottling. The wine offers up a stunningly beautiful bouquet of red and black raspberries, cigar wrapper, a lovely array of Rioja spice tones, salty soil tones, woodsmoke and a lovely framing of coconutty American oak. On the palate the wine is deep, ripe and full-bodied, with a sappy core of fruit, superb soil inflection and grip, suave, seamless tannins, beautiful focus and balance and a very, very long, complex and utterly refined finish. This wine comes in at 14.5 percent in the ripe vintage of 2015, but there is absolutely no hint of heat on the backend, which is just utterly classical and stunning. At eight years of age, this wine is certainly approachable already, but in reality it is still a young wine and it will not to show all of its layers of complexity without another decade’s worth of bottle age. It is a brilliant wine." 95+ John Gilman, View From The Cellar

"They used the words subtlety, elegance, finesse, delicacy, and silk to define the 2015 Gran Reserva 904 Selección Especial, a blend of 90% Tempranillo from their vineyards in Villalba, Briñas and Rodezno with 10% Graciano from the Montecillo vineyard in Fuenmayor that was picked 23 days later than the Tempranillo. The grapes were sorted optically for the first time, and they fermented in stainless steel where the wine went through malolactic too. The wine was put in barrel in January 2016—used American oak barrels built by their own coopers—where it matured for four years, during which time it was racked every six months. 2015 was a healthy vintage with balanced ripeness that delivered wines with good aging potential. They thought the wine needed a little more time in bottle to polish those tannins and have decided to hold it and release the wine around March 2023; it will be marked Selección Especial, the first 904 to do so, as they have very high hopes for this year and believe it's one of the finest vintages. They think it will develop the sophistication in the palate with a little more time and that is should achieve the silkiness that is the signature of 904." 95 Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate

"Vivid ruby. Expansive red and blue fruit preserve, tobacco, potpourri, spice and botanical herb aromas, with vanilla and smoky mineral notes emerging as the wine opens up. Sappy, penetrating and gently chewy on the palate, offering vibrant, mineral- and spice-accented black raspberry, bitter cherry and rose pastille flavors that deepen and turn sweeter on the back half. Shows sharp focus and floral lift on the impressively long, youthfully tannic finish, which leaves behind notes of candied blue fruits and spicecake. One of Rioja’s most famed bodegas, this 300-hectare estate was established in the heart of Haro in 1890. All of the vineyards are in Rioja Alta, unsurprising given the name. La Rioja Alta has a long-standing reputation for producing some of the region’s best, most traditionally made wines, across the range. Solid value is the rule here, from top to bottom .... American oak is used exclusively, and its influence on the wines can be marked, even with age. While that style isn’t everybody’s cup of tea, Tempranillo fans of the old Rioja school, and there are plenty of them, are loyal followers of the estate with good reason." 95 Josh Raynolds, Vinous

Domaines Lupier Garnacha Navarra La Dama 2018, 0.75L
Grenache from Navarra, Navarra

"No 2017 was produced, so after the 2016 I tasted a while ago, we jump to the 2018 La Dama, vinified by Enrique Basarte and Elisa Úcar and blended and bottled by Raúl Pérez, the new owner of the project. They always look for a more delicate expression of Garnacha from selected stonier plots of old head-pruned and dry-farmed vines in the village of San Martín de Unx that are worked organically and biodynamically but are not certified. The wine is stunning, elegant and aromatic, with depth, complexity and grip. It's incredibly young and expressive and doesn't show its age at all; it has a refined nose and is quite fruit-driven and floral, with very integrated oak (like never before), supple flavors and very fine tannins. It has good ripeness and contained alcohol (13.8%) and good freshness and acidity (with a pH of 3.46 and 6.3 grams of tartaric)." 97 Luis Guterrez, Wine Advocate

Bodega Mustiguillo Pago El Terrerazo Finca Terrerazo 2019, 0.75L
Bobal from El Terrerazo, Valencia

"... Fermented in 3,500- and 5,000-liter oak vats with indigenous yeasts and a soft extraction, and it had an élevage in those containers of 18 months. There is a step up in precision here, quite noticeable when tasting it next to the 2018. It's subtle, elegant and insinuating. It was a very good vintage for this wine. In 2018, the vineyards suffered from hail, and the wine shows more clarity here, it's more transparent and pure, it has symmetry and very fine tannins.
