JL Vergnon Blanc de Blancs 'Conversation' Grand Cru Brut NV Disgorged Sept 2022 NV, 0.75L
Chardonnay from Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Champagne
“The nose of the NV Champagne Grand Cru Conversation Brut lifts with a stylistically sweet perfume that translates through the entire range. It offers notes of sweet pastry, ripe peach, and honeydew melon, and the palate is medium-bodied and has ripe juicy fruit as well as a kiss of sweetness, with green apple candy, key lime, and white flowers. Approachable now, it would make a wonderful aperitif or an after dinner reset, given there is a hint of that generosity from the dosage. Drink over the next 8-10 years.”

Mayacamas Cabernet Sauvignon 2019, 0.75L
Cabernet Sauvignon from Mt. Veeder, California
"Loaded with character and energy, this version reveals heavy notes of zesty sweet bay leaf and sassafras that infuse a core of steeped red currant and mulberry fruit, all carried by bright acidity and iron-laced tannins. The long finish pulls everything together, with the fruit, savory and mineral elements in harmony. Showing an old-school touch, this has a long life ahead. Best from 2025 through 2045. 4,000 cases made."

Domaines Lupier Garnacha Navarra La Dama 2018, 0.75L
Grenache from Navarra, Navarra
"No 2017 was produced, so after the 2016 I tasted a while ago, we jump to the 2018 La Dama, vinified by Enrique Basarte and Elisa Úcar and blended and bottled by Raúl Pérez, the new owner of the project. They always look for a more delicate expression of Garnacha from selected stonier plots of old head-pruned and dry-farmed vines in the village of San Martín de Unx that are worked organically and biodynamically but are not certified. The wine is stunning, elegant and aromatic, with depth, complexity and grip. It's incredibly young and expressive and doesn't show its age at all; it has a refined nose and is quite fruit-driven and floral, with very integrated oak (like never before), supple flavors and very fine tannins. It has good ripeness and contained alcohol (13.8%) and good freshness and acidity (with a pH of 3.46 and 6.3 grams of tartaric)." 97 Luis Guterrez, Wine Advocate

Piaggia Poggio de'Colli Toscana 2020, 0.75L
Cabernet Franc from Carmignano, Tuscany
"The darkly alluring 2020 Cabernet Franc Poggio de' Colli takes its time in the glass, slowly awakening with a dusty mix of red currants, pepper-tinged rose, exotic curries and the slightest touch of animal musk that adds gravitas. This is velvety smooth yet finessed. It's cool-toned in feel with a potent wave of tart raspberry fruits that saturates the palate with savory spice and mineral tones. It leaves a coating of fine tannins and a staining of berry concentration through the finale, tapering off sapid and long, yet perfectly balanced. What a radiant vintage for the Poggio de' Colli, Piaggia's varietal Cabernet Franc. Revisit it in five years to see some real sparks fly. (Drink between 2026-2034)" 97 Eric Guido, Vinous.com

Crystallum Pinot Noir Peter Max 2020, 0.75L
Pinot Noir from Walker Bay, South Africa
"The 2020 Peter Max felt quite austere on the nose, more so than the 2019 that I had tasted 3–4 days previously. This demands coaxing, eventually revealing brambly red fruit, briar, damp moss and then later, hints of morello cherries. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, taut and crisp, delivering very pure tart red fruit. There is an attractive "bite" toward the finish, which is structured like a Morey-Saint-Denis, the lingering salinity urging you back. Excellent, but give it a couple of years for the aromatics to fully open. (Drink between 2024-2037)" 92 Neal Martin, Vinous.com

Domaine de la Taille aux Loups (Jacky Blot) Montlouis Sur Loire Clos Mosny 2021, 0.75L
Chenin Blanc from Montlouis, Loire
"Tender and restrained notes of fresh lemon zest, lemon pith and honey on the nose, but on the palate there is an opulent, seductive feeling. The long, precise finish is exquisite, but needs more time in bottle to develop, where it will certainly age well. A true grand vin with a potential for 98 points. The 12-hectare Clos de Mosny is a real clos – enclosed by a wall – in the commune of Saint-Martin-le-Beau in the southern part of Montlouis. It faces due south and it has a variety of soils – sand in the lower part, and clay and flint over a bedrock of limestone. The Blot family are the sole owners and only the best parts of the Clos are used in this single-vineyard wine. The grapes are hand-harvested and fermentation and maturation is in Burgundian barrels. Bachelet-Monnot La Fussiere Rouge Maranges 2021, 0.75L
Pinor Noir from Maranges, Burgundy
"The 2021 Maranges La Fussières 1er Cru Rouge was very complex to pick, the 5.5-hectares with ten different types of ripening depending on vine age and terroirs. It has a very mineral-driven bouquet, beautifully defined with more black fruit than the Clos de la Boutière. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp red fruit, a little leafy in style and sapid with a slightly peppery finish that might fool you into thinking there were stems in the blend (when in fact, they were too green to include this year). (Drink between 2024-2038)" 91-93 Neal Martin, Vinous
"A more elegant and admirably pure nose freely offers up its aromas of red cherry, plum and violet along with a more subtle touch of earth. There is again excellent vibrancy to the beautifully delineated medium-bodied flavors that flash both a subtle minerality and a beguiling finesse on the balanced finale. This is a really lovely effort that makes one feel like drinking it now, though it too has the stuffing to repay a few years of aging. Worth considering." 90 Allen Meadows, Burghound

Bachelet-Monnot Puligny Montrachet 2021, 0.75L
Chardonnay from Puligny Montrachet , Burgundy
"Firm reduction blocks an analysis of the nose today. By contrast, there is a really lovely sense of underlying tension to the dense and relatively powerful middleweight flavors that are succulent yet nicely detailed while retaining the innate refinement of a Puligny. This is an excellent villages that is well worth your consideration." 89-92 Allen Meadows, Burghound
"The 2021 Puligny-Montrachet Village has a strict, petrichor/wet limestone-scented bouquet, focused but not powerful. The palate is well balanced with a sappy entry, fine depth for a Village Cru and beautifully-judged acidity. A dab of spice enlivens the finish. This is an excellent, citrus-driven Puligny. Bodegas Albamar Alma de Mar Albarino 2021, 0.75L
Albariño from Rías Baixas, Galicia
"Alma de Mar" is one of Xurxo's top wines, and comes from a single plot of 100% Albariño very close to the sea. The grapes are grown organically, harvest is done manually, it is pressed directly and then goes through spontaneous alcoholic fermentation with yeasts natives of the vineyard itself. Once the alcoholic fermentation ends, it goes through bâtonnage for 8 months, then it is racked to remove from the lees and after 3 or 4 months it is bottled. No fining, only a slight filtration and minimal use of SO2. Stunning minerality and length with this one. Clean, bright, and magical!" Importer Notes

Château de Plaisance Anjou Sur La Butte 2021, 0.75L
Cabernet Sauvignon / Cabernet Franc from Anjou, Loire
“Vanessa Cherruau is a steward of one of the Loire’s great terroirs – Chaume. After finishing wine school in Angers, she worked throughout the wine industry for 12 years before befriending the Rochais family on the Chaume hill, who owned Château de Plaisance (more a farmhouse than Château) and its 25 hectares of vines growing on the schist bedrock of the appellation. With plans to sell the historic estate to the local cooperative, Vanessa convinced the family to sell to her instead, allowing her to continue the fine legacy they left, while forging a new path for Loire greatness. Luckily for Vanessa, she inherited some of the most well-cared for vines on the hill, as Plaisance has been certified organic since 1995 and certified biodynamic since 2008. She of course has continued the biodynamic viticulture started by her predecessors, knowing that taking care of the natural environment of the vines is of utmost importance. Since her first vintage in 2019, she has helped raise the image of dry Chenin made on the Chaume hill to where it is now one of the most intriguing Chenin terroirs in the Loire. Only 10km south of Savennières, Chaume is a sweet-wine-only appellation (Quarts de Chaume Grand Cru and Coteaux de Layon 1er Cru Chaume), and so Vanessa and the other producers of dry Chenin on the hill cannot legally use ‘Chaume’ on their labels. This hasn’t deterred Vanessa from continuing to make world-class dry wines, joining other growers on the hill to create their own name for dry Chenin made from vines on Chaume – Ronceray. This name has been adopted by growers to help promote the dry wines of Chaume, with its origin coming from the name of a 17th century monastery that made dry wines on the Chaume hill. Vanessa is unquestionably of the leaders of this qualitative surge in the area, with whites and reds of gorgeous purity and soaring minerality …. SUR LA BUTTE: Certified Biodynamic; 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Cabernet Franc; from the lieux-dits ‘Clos de l’Etand’ and ‘Le Grand Lopin;’ 3 ha total on the Chaume hill, facing south; Plaisance owns the only red grapes on the Chaume hill; 35+ year old vines; spilite over schist bedrock; de-stemmed; 2-3 week maceration; indigenous yeast; fermented and aged in concrete for 11 months.” Skurnik

Dominio de Anza/Diego Magaña Bierzo Tinto Selección de Parcelas 2020, 0.75L
Mencía / Bastardo / Garnacha Tintorera from Bierzo, Castilla Y Leon
I found earthier notes and a darker aromas in the 2020 Dominio de Anza Selección de Parcelas, a common thing in the 2020s, perhaps a little reductive. In 2020, part of the wine comes from a new plot on slate soils in the village of San Lorenzo, and perhaps it has some notes reminiscent of a Barolo. The profile of the wine has changed: it's not as aromatic as the 2019, and it has a different texture with more noticeable tannins. This 15% of the wine from a different zone and soil has changed it. It might require more time. 8,900 bottles produced. 94 Luis Gutierrez, Wine Advocate, Jan 2022

Evening Land Chardonnay Seven Springs Vineyard Summum 2019, 0.75L
Chardonnay from Eola-Amity Hills, Oregon
"This one of the top sites for Chardonnay in Oregon. The grapes are pressed as whole clusters and run directly into used casks for fermentation on native yeasts. The wine does full malolactic conversion, but it neither stirred nor racked during aging. The result has a lovely ripe apple and quince fruit with a suggestion of chamomile. The texture is creamy and rich, but there is no fat, and the overall impression is very Burgundian. Superb length and great aging potential make this is an imposing wine. Drinking Window 2021 - 2031." 95 Charles Curtis MW, Decanter Magazine

Crystallum Chardonnay The Agnes 2018, 0.75L
Chardonnay from Walker Bay, South Africa
"The 2018 The Agnes comes from five vineyards in Hemel-en-Aarde and Overberg, aged in 228- and 500-liter barrels with 10% new oak. It has a discreet bouquet with subtle pressed flower and shale-like aromas that suggest this is a Chardonnay for cellaring. The palate is wonderfully poised, revealing hints of vanilla and coconut flakes on the entry, countered by a crisp line of acidity and a pleasing tautness on the finish. Excellent." 92 Neal Martin, Vinous.com Nov 2019
“It’s always a pleasure to meet with the indefatigable Peter-Allan Finlayson, whose wines at Crystallum I have been shoveling praise upon since his debut vintage …. [he] was on hand to guide me through his latest releases, although he admitted that he had forgotten to bring one of them. Probably had his mind on other things: the impending 2017 harvest and the fact that now he oversees not just Crystallum but Gabrielskloof, whose wines I have reviewed separately. Hopefully the reviews speak for themselves, merely consolidating everything that I have written before, principally that these are some of South Africa's finest Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays. Attesting to that was the fine performance of his wine when served against the likes of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti of J-L Trapet at a lunch in Cape Town just a few days earlier. I asked about recent developments at Crystallum, and Fin—as he is known in these parts—told me that he had recently bought a piece of his own land for Crystallum, located around two kilometers past Creation, therefore outside the Hemel-en-Aarde region. At the moment he is still buying fruit from growers, but this single hectare of Pinot Noir is a start to obtaining "dirt" that he can call his own. As usual, these wines are highly recommended, although quantities remain frustratingly small.” Neal Martin, Vinous.com 2015/2017

Bodegas y Viñedos Artadi Quintanilla 2019, 0.75L
Tempranillo from Álava, Euskadi
"Fresh yet deep nose, exuding aromas of dark blackberries, blueberries and a hint of iodine, violet, cream and mineral. Pretty elegant on the palate with a medium to full body, unleashing plenty of chalky tannins that give a solid bite to the finish. Dense yet still fluid, with a lengthy finish. Beautiful balance. Tempranillo. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold." 96 James Suckling, Jamessuckling.com, Sept 2022
"The bottled 2019 Quintanilla combines the power of the year and the place with 14.68% alcohol and soft acidity. There are more tannins, and it has the chalky sensation of the limestone. It also has notions of ripe berries and the character of this year's wines, keeping the freshness. This is austere and mineral within the ripeness. It comes from a 1.13-hectare plot on limestone and sandstone soils planted in 1951 in the village of Elvillar, a walled, old-vine plot located in what was the 15th-century village of San Lorenzo de Quintanilla. The vineyard tends to produce powerful wines, and its grapes were always used to make the Pagos Viejos. This has some rugged tannins that give it a little rusticity, a character of the plot that tends to get stressed in warmer years. 2,800 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2021." 93+ Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate, July 2022

Altos Las Hormigas Malbec Reserve 2020, 0.75L
Malbec from Valle de Uco, Mendoza
"The 2020 Malbec Reserve was produced from vines on limestone soils in Gualtallary (80%) and Altamira (20%) with concentration and elegance. It has 13.8% alcohol and keeps very good freshness and balance. It fermented with natural yeasts, and 75% of the volume matured in oak foudre for 18 months and the rest in raw concrete. They have had the courage to go for their own style, and this wine reflects that, but perhaps it's the most classical of their bottlings. It has ripeness without excess and varietal aromas of violet, iron and blood with an earthy touch and the chalky minerality in the texture. 2020 was a warm and dry vintage, and the wine manages to keep the poise and has the complexity of the noble origin but without the agility of the wines from 2019. 40,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2022." 93 Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate, Nov 2022

Donnachadh Family Vineyards Pinot Noir Sta Rita Hills 2021, 0.75L
Pinot Noir from Santa Rita Hills, California
"The 2021 Pinot Noir Sta. Rita Hills, matured for 10 months in neutral oak, is the first appellation-wide Pinot from Donnachadh. Like the Chardonnay, this vintage was sourced entirely from the Donnachadh estate, although that may not be the case in the future. It has a pale ruby color and very pure, fragrant scents of cranberry, raspberry, strawberry, bergamot, tea leaves and herbs. The medium-bodied palate is finely chalky and wonderfully fresh, boasting concentrated red berry flavors, fine citrusy accents and a long, ethereal finish. This really stands out for its detail and expression—it's as if the volume was turned up yet the definition preserved." 95 Erin Brooks, Wine Advocate, Dec 2022

Donnachadh Family Vineyards Chardonnay Sta Rita Hills 2021, 0.75L
Chardonnay from Santa Rita Hills, California
"The 2021 Chardonnay Sta. Rita Hills is the first vintage of Chardonnay from Donnachadh. It was barrel fermented and matured for around 10 months. Its aromas combine bright herbal, green apple and pear tones with underlying savory hints. The light-bodied palate is bright and fresh, yet offers a touch of anchoring creaminess that draws out the finish. Proprietor Drew Duncan says that for this vintage, fruit came from the Donnachadh estate, although that may not be the case in the future as this new project really gets up and running." 94 Erin Brooks, Wine Advocate, Dec 2022

Jaimee Motley Wines Peter Martin Ray Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Santa Cruz Mountains 2018, 0.75L
Cabernet Sauvignon from Santa Cruz Mountains, California
"Jaimee Motley's 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Peter Martin Ray is shaping up to be a jewel of a wine. Rich and layered in the glass, the 2018 has that extra kick of mid-palate density and volume that the 2017 doesn't, the result of a far more even and favorable growing season. Dark plum, mint, lavender, spice and dried herbs all develop with a bit of air, but it is the wine's balance that is most compelling. The 50% whole clusters are barely perceptible. What a wine..." 91-94 Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com, Jan 2021

Donnhoff Pinot Brut 2017, 0.75L
Pinot Noir from Nahe, Nahe
"Famous, steeply sloping vineyard in a small side valley of the middle section of the Nahe River. The “Höllenpfad” (“Path to Hell”) name is an old one, likely referencing both the vineyard‘s steep slope as well as the unique color of the red sandstone. The surrounding landscape is bathed daily in the rich, warm light of the evening sun as it reflects off the hillside‘s distinctive red soil. It‘s also not hard to imagine that the word „Hell“ might have been uttered by many a winegrower after a particularly laborious day on these steep slopes. The weathered warm sandstone of the Rotliegend strata lends the wines their inimitable character. Grapes grown here tend to be very small with intense, nuanced aromas; the resulting wines are elegant with a spicy mineral fruit and excellent aging potential." Importer Notes

Nikolaihof Steiner Hund Riesling 2017, 0.75L
Riesling from Wachau, Niederösterreich
"Another stunning Steiner Hund dry riesling from Nikolaihof! Deep and complex nose with a ton of flint, but also crushed-rock, quince and pomelo aromas. For the very warm vintage this is astonishingly cool and restrained, with beautiful wet-stone minerality intertwined with the elegant acidity. Very long, silky finish. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink or hold." 95 Points, James Suckling. JamesSuckling.com

Condesa Clasica Gin NV, 0.75L
Gin from Mexico City, Mexico City
"Condesa Clásica Gin expands on a powerful botanical base of juniper to explore distinctly Mexican aromatics and spiritual traditions. Distilled using copper pot stills and built upon a Mexican-sourced neutral grain distillate of corn, rye, wheat, and barley; thirteen botanicals including juniper, palo santo, white sage, jasmine, coriander, elderflower, lavender, rosemary, cedron, myrrh, lime & orange zests echo the curandera (healer) traditions that use many of these same ingredients to cleanse negative energy, attract love, and expand consciousness. Jasmine, white sage, and the citrusy, faintly confectionary wood of the Palo Santo tree dominate this unique yet approachable gin. 43% ABV." Importer Notes

Hiedler Riesling Ried Heiligenstein Erste Lage 2021, 0.75L
Riesling from Kamptal, Kamptal
"Sourced from 60-year-old vines, Hiedler's 2021 Ried Heiligenstein 1ÖTW Riesling shows clear, open, bright and elegant fruit with herbal as well as earthy notes of broken rock. Juicy, intense and dense in the mouth, this is a powerful and firmly structured, still somewhat bitter Heiligenstein that needs some time to develop its full size. It's undoubtedly a great Riesling from the Kamptal. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in Grafenegg in September 2022." 94+ Points, Stephen Reinhardt, Wine Advocate

Bernhard Ott Gruner Veltliner Ried Rosenberg 2017, 0.75L
Gruner Veltliner from Wagram, Wagram
"From 60-year-old vines picked on September 29, Ott's Feuersbrunner 2017 Grüner Veltliner Ried Rosenberg 1ÖTW is super clear, precise and fresh on the nose where tropical and stone fruit aromas such as apricots, white peaches, nectarines, papayas and mangos are displayed. Full-bodied, lush and round with very fine acidity and good structure, this is a densely woven, fleshy, super elegant, persistent and very powerful Veltliner with an impressive but slightly massive finish. Super sexy but I tend to prefer the Spiegel from the 2017 vintage. Tasted at Schloss Grafenegg and three weeks later in Vienna, both September 2018." 93 Points, Stephen Reinhardt, Wine Advocate
